IPC ↔ BNS Section Finder Guide

India’s criminal law changed on 1 July 2024 — and most Indians do not know it yet.

The Indian Penal Code, 1860 — a statute that governed Indian criminal law for 163 years — was repealed and replaced by the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. Every section number changed. IPC §302 (Murder) is now BNS §103. IPC §420 (Cheating) is now BNS §318(4). IPC §498A (Cruelty by husband) is now BNS §85. IPC §376 (Rape) is now BNS §64.

Courts are returning filings with wrong citations. Police officers are citing repealed provisions. Citizens facing cases have no idea what the section in their FIR actually means — or whether they are entitled to bail.

This free interactive tool was built to fix that. Search any IPC section number and find its BNS equivalent instantly. Search any BNS section number and trace it back to the IPC. Or simply type a keyword — murder, dowry, cheating, forgery, rape, stalking — and every matching provision appears in one flat table, with punishment ranges, bail status, and Hindi language support.

143 sections mapped. Verified against the BNS 2023 bare act (Act 45 of 2023). Free for every Indian. No login. No paywall. Works on mobile.
